Thursday night, I had the honor of attending the inaugural gathering of The Global Alliance for Transformational Entertainment (GATE) at the FOX studios in Los Angeles.
I flew in from San Francisco specifically for the event. As I arrived at LAX, standing in the taxi queue, I secretly fantasized that I would bump into an enlightened celebrity also on their way to the event. I fantasized that I would say hello, ask them if they were going to GATE, too, and they would offer me a ride to the venue.
It didn’t happen.
Instead, the cabbie came. He skirted LA traffic to get me to FOX studios lot the moment the event was supposed to begin. From the long line of cars waiting to get past security, it was clear… things don’t start on time in Hollywood.
After sitting a few minutes in line, my cab driver suggested that it would be faster (and less expensive) to walk. So, out I hopped. High heels and all. I glided past all the cars lined up at the gate. One woman with her window rolled down smiled and said, “You’ve got the right idea!”
I showed my invitation at the gate, and the security guard gave me directions.
“See that stop sign down there?” he asked. “Turn left there. Then go right at the next block. Then two blocks down on the left.”
Yikes. This could take a while…
So off I go, trekking the FOX lot in high heels.
I was barely two minutes into my adventure when a car slows down beside me. It was the same woman who had cheered me on for walking at the gate. “Need a ride?” she asked.
“That would be G R E A T!” What a relief. I climbed in and shut the door.
The driver turns to me in the backseat to welcome me and shake my hand. “I’m Alanis,” she says, “and this is my friend Crystal.”
“I’m Mindy,” I reply. “Thanks so much for the ride.”
That’s what I said out loud. What I said in my head is, “Oh my God… I think I just hitched a ride with Alanis Morisette.” Which indeed, I later confirmed, was the case.
I share this story first and foremost because I think it’s such a cool story, and I still have to chuckle at how my airport daydream ultimately manifested.
The more significant message to the world is this: Brace yourself. The shift that is happening in our collective consciousness will soon feel the impact of more than 400 professionals in the entertainment industry who are dedicated to bringing a message of hope to the world.
My first experience of Hollywood was not tinsel and ego. It was compassion, authenticity, and service.
So thanks again, Alanis. I’ve got one hand in my pocket. And the other one is giving the peace sign…
